Obatala, the most ancient of the energies, and conceived as the most beneficent, is the lord of the cloth or clay from which humanity and all or much of creation is formed; those devoted to him are the most sensitive of creatures – and are exhorted to lead the purest of lives with the purest of actions. The purity of his cloth and clay or being has in other places been characterised as white – and white, in the phenotypical sense, which is in our view, incorrect; for the purity is of solidness, and all cloth of one solid or block colour can represent the purity of Obatala, though white being preferred in other practices is not an aspersion on the colour white or those practices, but in our conception the strongest expression of this energy’s purity are black, silver and grey.
